Welcome to 5/6 and back to school!

As I have told the students already, I see one of my most important jobs this year is to do as much as I can to prepare the Year 6's for high school next year (whilst not forgetting about our wonderful Year 5 students!). I believe that their last year here at Beechwood should be all about making sure that they feel confident and academically and socially ready for the challenges of high school, while at the same time having fun. For these reasons our class might do things a little different this year to their previous years. For example, there will be more emphasis on independent work, with the expectation to work hard, demonstrate their best effort and to complete work within a set time frame. Some students may struggle with this at first, however as the year progresses hopefully organisational skills will improve, resulting in all work completed to an appropriate level.

This term you will see Miss Pollard and myself in 5/6 at different times. I will be teaching 5/6 on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, while Miss Pollard will have the class on Thursdays and Fridays. The class will also have Library with Mrs Arentsen on Thursdays. On the days/sessions that I am not on class, I can be found providing learning and/or welfare support to other students throughout the school.

The following is an outline of the topics and some brief organisational information:

English – We will work through an English unit focused on relationships, anti-bullying, discrimination and differences. At a 5/6 level students are expected to understand ideas or issues in texts stated literally, as well as those that are inferred by the author. The students will be expected to be able to justify their own opinions throughout the text and to write about their understanding of different elements. 5/6 reading and viewing focuses on interpreting ideas, making connections to texts, predicting and justifying responses. In addition to our English unit, the students will read independently almost every day. I have spoken to the students about having an age/grade appropriate novel at school with them every day so that they can do this. You may be able to assist your son/daughter with this by making time to go to the local library or encouraging them to read books from home or to borrow from our school library.

Writing – Along with teaching specific handwriting, writing, spelling and grammar skills, I am also going to have a focus on exposing the students to (and hopefully teaching them to use) vocabulary that is slightly more complex and sophisticated.

Mathematics - Our focus this term will be on Whole Numbers, Addition, Subtraction, Length, Position, Chance & Data. This year our Maths sessions will also incorporate problem solving and mental computation.

Homework – This year I am asking all students to buy and keep their homework sheets in an A4 folder.  Homework will usually be a review of concepts that we have covered previously and may include some handwriting, spelling, writing, maths or reading activities. Just like high school, students will not necessarily get homework every Monday this year. It may be given out any day of the week and students will need to take note of the day that it is due. This week I have already handed out both of this term's assignments. Their first piece of homework for the year is a creative assignment, so I'm hoping that it will be an enjoyable one for them all! At times this year 5/6 will receive home assignments as well as some regular homework. When this happens, I will take into consideration the amount of work and either reduce the quantity or increase the time given to complete them.

Most students already have the appropriate equipment for the classroom, however I would like to encourage each child to also have a small student diary, as well as their own USB / flash drive (8GB is sufficient) to keep in his/her pencil case. This will make saving their work much easier throughout the year.

This year is a very busy time for 5/6: The Year 6 students will start off helping their Kindergarten Buddies, both in their classroom and in the playground; we will have to host the first assembly in week 3; there will be a Parliament Assembly/Induction to prepare; Parliament meetings; Grandparents' Day Assembly and Zone swimming for many of our class members….. and that's just a few things this term! Mr Cook, Miss Pollard and I have the absolute highest expectations for behaviour and self-control from the senior students, and I am confident that they will not let anybody down in these areas!
