Year 4/5 Newsletter
Term 2 2018
Welcome Back to Term 2…. I hope you all had a fun and relaxing time to unwind and enjoy some family time over the holiday break! This term is filled with many exciting programs inside and outside the classroom. Please read the following information and important dates for Term 2.
Stationary
Please ensure your child has the necessary stationery at school each day. Please label all items and replenish when necessary.
Homework
Our homework will be a bit different this term due to public speaking in week 6. Students will be given their spelling list words to practise each week, I have also asked that they read 10-15 minutes, four nights a week. Homework will stay this way during weeks 2-6, after students have completed and delivered their speeches, homework will then return to the Homework Grid that students received during Term 1.
English
This term our unit for English is titled, ‘Your Story, My Story, Our Story'. The unit focuses on developing an understanding and appreciation of Australia's history and heritage through story. Students explore the different ways stories are told such as oral storytelling, story through dance, song, drama, art, poetry and the written word. The stories they will experience will include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander legends, painting, dance and song. They will also explore traditional Australian stories by authors such as Banjo Patterson and Henry Lawson, as well as traditional ballads and paintings. They will use these stories to build a picture of what Australia was like in the past and how that contributes to Australia's identity today.
Mathematics
In Mathematics this term we will be covering the topics Fractions and Decimals, Multiplication and Division, Patterns and Algebra, Time, Volume and Capacity, 3D shapes and Whole Number. We will continue to strengthen our Working Mathematically skills through problem solving, Fast Maths and mentals.
PD/H/PE
This term, Beechwood will be participating in the Premier's Sporting Challenge. Students will be encouraged to complete at least 20 minutes of physical activity per day and record it in a log at school. Physical activity can include:
- School sport
- Outside of school sport/training
- Dance
- Walking and riding to and from school etc.
History
Students will continue the Colonisation unit on "First Contacts". This term will focus on the First Fleet, the arrival of the British and the affects this had on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.
Library and Science
This term students will engage in a Science unit titled, ‘Products'. Science lessons will continue to be taught by Mrs Mac on a Tuesday morning 10am – 11am.
Library is on Wednesday mornings from 10am – 11am, where Mrs Arentsen will be taking the class during this time and teaching PD/H/PE lessons on Growth Mindset and Drug Education, as well as some Environmental Studies.
Public Speaking
During this term, all students will be required to prepare a speech at home and deliver it in class as part of the speaking and listening curriculum. This is a compulsory task; however students may choose to prepare a multicultural topics or a topic of their choice. While students are working on their speeches at home their homework load will be reduced.
On A Final Note
Unfortunately it is the season for illness, viruses, infections, etc. So please carefully consider sending your child to school if they are unwell. Not only is it unpleasant for your child to be unwell at school, but it runs the risk of their fellow classmates (including myself) becoming unwell and infected. Thank you for your support with this.
As I am new to the year 4/5 class this term, if there's anything you would like to discuss with me about your son or daughter, please feel free to come down and make an appointment to see me or send me an email.
My door is always open!
Regards,
Miss Sarah Pollard
